In the world of photography, every detail matters. From the location and lighting to the emotions captured, each element contributes to creating timeless images that tell your unique story. One often overlooked but crucial aspect of a successful lifestyle photography session – or any photography session – is choosing the right wardrobe. Your clothing not only reflects your personal style but also sets the tone for the entire photo shoot. So, let’s dive into some tips on what to wear to ensure your lifestyle photography session is not only memorable but visually stunning.
If you made your way to my blog, chances are you’re interested in a collection of photos that highlight real moments that reflect your life and portray your authentic emotions, so I cannot stress this enough: your clothing should reflect your personality and make you feel comfortable. Whether you’re into casual chic, bohemian vibes, or classic elegance, choose outfits that resonate with your true self. Use your wardrobe as a tool for self-expression, allowing your personality to shine through in every frame. When you feel a connection to what you’re wearing, it adds an extra layer of authenticity to the images, creating a visual narrative that tells the story of who you are in that moment.
Coordinating outfits with your family or significant other can add a polished and cohesive look to your photos. However, avoid matching outfits exactly. Instead, opt for a color palette that compliments each other. This allows individual personalities to shine while maintaining a harmonious overall look.
Not sure where to start? That’s what I’m here for! I offer each of my clients a simple wardrobe guide with sample color palettes and photo examples. I also make myself available to receive text-photos of options they are considering and respond with personalized, real-time advice. The backdrop of your photography session plays a significant role in determining your wardrobe choices. Consider the color scheme of the location – whether it’s a lush green park, an urban cityscape, or a serene beach. Choose colors that both complement the surroundings and make you stand out from them. You don’t want your clothing to cause you to blend into the backdrop.
Photography – especially mine – often involves movement and interaction, whether it’s a playful moment with your children, a romantic stroll with your partner, or whatever activities fill your life. Choose clothing that allows you to move comfortably and naturally. Flowing dresses, comfortable denim, or well-fitted separates can contribute to a dynamic and visually engaging photo session.
Texture and layers can add visual interest and dimension to your photos. Consider incorporating different fabrics, such as knits, denim, linen, or even leathers and fringe. (One of my favorites is a big knitted sweater!) Layers not only provide depth but also offer the opportunity to create diverse looks throughout the session. If you layer in a jacket, sweater, or shawl into your outfit, we have the option of removing it part way through the session or using it as a prop, giving us a whole new world of poses, colors, and shots to work with!
Loud logos and busy patterns can be distracting in photographs. Opt for solid colors or subtle patterns that won’t take attention away from the main focus – you and your loved ones! This ensures that the images remain timeless and focused on the emotions we’re trying to capture. Flattering patterns and prints tend to include:
If you’re coordinating with family or others, limit patterned wardrobes to 1-2 individuals and build the rest of your color palette around those patterns. If too many subjects are wearing patterns, the images will appear ‘busy’ and possibly clashing.
Accessories can be a great way to enhance your overall look. Whether it’s a statement necklace, a hat, or a pair of sunglasses, choose accessories that complement your style without overpowering the entire ensemble. Adding a scarf or neutral-colored hat, in particular, to your ensemble will give us lots of options for mixing up your look during the shoot. Other great options that add texture and interest include watches, hair barrettes/accessories, shawls, or boots.
Choosing the perfect outfit for your session goes beyond aesthetics – it’s about how you feel in what you’re wearing. The key to capturing natural emotion in your photos is to feel comfortable and confident. When you’re at ease in your chosen attire, your true expressions will shine through, resulting in authentic and heartwarming moments frozen in time. Your body language speaks volumes in photographs, and it’s heavily influenced by how comfortable and confident you feel in your clothing. Ill-fitting or restrictive outfits can inadvertently affect your posture and expressions. On the other hand, when you wear something that makes you feel fantastic, your body language becomes more open, relaxed, and reflective of the joyous moments being captured. When you feel great in what you wear, it not only boosts your confidence but also allows the photographer to capture the true essence of who you are.
– Mid-long length dresses and skirts tend to be flattering on all body types and in every season. Try choosing a dress or blouse that is more form fitting on top to pair well with the flowy-ness below. This will ensure that your figure is shown in the photographs and you have the benefit of the beautiful movement created by
-Avoid clothing that is too large. Even if you don’t feel great about your body type, clothing that is bulky or baggy will actually make you appear larger than you are!
-Try on clothing options several days before your shoot so you have time to shop for alternatives if needed.
-Avoid Choosing Too Many Colors. Limit to 1-2 colors for each individual to wear.
-It brings family photos to the next level and helps her stand out a little bit when Mom adds a pop of color to her outfit!
-Stick with neutral colored shoes that are not visually worn and do not have distracting logos. Avoid flip-flops, uncomfortable shoes, or spiky heels.
-Think about what colors you have in your house and what would coordinate with what you like to see in your home.
Your photography session is a unique opportunity to capture the essence of your life and relationships. By thoughtfully choosing your wardrobe, you not only enhance the visual appeal of your photos but also ensure that the images truly reflect who you are. So, express yourself, coordinate with your surroundings, and embrace the opportunity to create lasting memories in style.
